Winning cell research

Friday, 21 September 2012

Congratulations to Dr Rob White who has been awarded the Department of Health Western Australia New Investigator Prize for Biomedical Research for best oral presentation.

Dr White’s presentation was entitled Transcriptional signaling in myogenic satellite cells and focused on his research conducted at ECU’s Parkinson’s Centre (ParkC) in collaboration with King’s College, London.

Dr White said the collaborative research focuses on the genetic makeup of stem cells and how they mature into adult cells.

“The scope of this is that we now know more about which genes' participation is required if we are to effectively use adult stem cells to repair damage caused by disease or injury,” Dr White said.

“At ParkC, we focus heavily on this; getting adult stem cells to adopt the correct path towards tissue repair.

“The prize of $2000 will enable me to undertake further collaborative work with colleagues in the eastern states, expanding the capacity of researchers at ParkC to develop our knowledge of how to effectively and safely use adult stem cells as a potential clinical resource."
