AIEF-BHP Billiton Iron Ore Scholarships
The AIEF-BHP Billiton Iron Ore Scholarships are available to outstanding current or future Indigenous students studying an eligible Engineering or other eligible mining-related degree. This is a unique and highly attractive opportunity to learn from experts, develop a global network of colleagues, attend world class training, and build exceptional skills and expertise.

Payments
Amount:
AIEF-BHPBIO Scholarships cover:
- payment of residential accommodation, meals and other expenses at a university residential college of your choice, up to a maximum of $20,000 per annum paid directly to the college
- an annual stipend of up to $2,000 per annum for text books and other materials, or other education related expenses such as field trips to be paid to the college at the beginning of the academic year for distribution to you
- a living allowance of up to $6,000 per annum, paid directly to you by the college in fortnightly instalments
- an allowance of up to $2,000 per annum for compulsory fees
What else the scholarship provides:
- vacation internships and (following successful completion of degree) a place on the Graduate Program at BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Western Australia
And - professional development and career pathways events with AIEF, with a focus on networking, skills and career development
Eligibility requirements
Eligibility criteria:
To be eligible you must:
- be an Australian resident
- be of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent and be able to provide supporting evidence of your Indigenous identity
- be enrolled full time to study an eligible degree at an Australian university or have selected an eligible degree as a first preference
- be accepted into a residential college
- demonstrate strong academic achievement and potential
- not be in receipt of any other scholarship, cadetship or similar support unless agreed by AIEF
- be willing to go through police clearance and other checks as required by BHPBIO
- be enthusiastic about a career in the mining industry
- be willing to accept a role on the BHPBIO vacation and graduate programs in Perth or the Pilbara, Western Australia

The Scholarships are available for Engineering or other eligible mining-related degrees. Students who are studying the following degrees will be eligible:
- Engineering - Civil
- Engineering - Control Systems
- Engineering - Electrical
- Engineering - Environmental
- Engineering - Geotechnical
- Engineering - Mechanical
- Engineering - Mechatronic
- Engineering - Metallurgy
- Engineering - Minerals Processing
- Engineering - Mining (Open Cut) (Minerals Processing or Metallurgy)
- Engineering - Mining
- Science - Chemistry
- Science - Earth (Geology) (Geology/Geoscience, Earth Sciences, Science/Applied Science with major in Geology/Geoscience)
- Science - Environmental (Environmental Science/ Health, Environmental Management, Science with major in Ecology or Environmental Studies)
- Science - Hydrology (Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering)
- Science - Spatial (Surveying)
- Other mining-related degrees as approved by AIEF
Nationality:
- Australian citizen
- Australian permanent resident
Level of study:
- UG - Undergraduate bachelor courses
Applicant information:
The award of this Scholarship may preclude you from holding other similar scholarships. AIEF-BHPBIO may amend the details and value of the Scholarship if you hold other scholarships or cadetships, or are in receipt of support from other similar sources. Dependent on circumstances, receipt of another scholarship, cadetship or other similar support may render you ineligible for this Scholarship. This will be at the absolute discretion of AIEF.
Selection:
Applications will be judged by a selection panel in accordance with the following criteria:
- academic ability, achievement and potential
- and response to questions in the Scholarship Application Form
Particular weight will be given to answers given to questions demonstrating:
- your interest in and commitment to working in the mining industry
- your interest in and commitment to working with BHPBIO in Western Australia on completion of your degree
