Finance, Economics, Markets and Accounting Research Centre

The Finance, Economics, Markets and Accounting Research Centre (FEMARC) was established in 1997 to support and encourage research into Finance and Capital Markets in Australia and within the Asia-Pacific Region.

The projects so far completed have generated substantial amount of research output, resulting in numerous publications in refereed international journals. The findings from the various projects have been presented at major national and international conferences. Papers have received various awards including "Best Paper" prizes and a succession of ANBAR Citations of Excellence.

The research in the Finance and Capital Markets area is led by Professor D.E. Allen and supported by a number of international academic staff, local researchers and a very strong group of visiting scholars. Numerous collaborative research projects have involved work with researchers at the following universities:

  • University of Western Australia; 
  • Curtin University; 
  • Australian National University;
  • Griffith University;
  • Monash University;
  • Southampton University;
  • Cambridge University; and
  • Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. 
Work has also been undertaken with industry research personnel from Goldman Sachs, Salomon Smith Barney, Securities Industry Research Centre of the Asia-Pacific and Assirt.

FEMARC research infrastructure

Databases

FEMARC has access to the Datastream set of databases in real time via a live internet link with the host database in London. This covers markets from most countries providing economics series, share prices, derivatives and futures price series, company financial statement information, analyst's forecasts etc. This is probably the most comprehensive set of databases commercially available. Thomson Reuters Datastream is the world's largest financial statistical database - covering an unrivalled wealth of asset classes, estimates, fundamentals, indices and economic data.

FEMARC is a member of the Securities Industry Research Centre of the Asia-Pacific (SIRCA). Membership gives the Centre access to very detailed market microstructure databases drawn initially from the Australian Stock Exchange and the Sydney Futures Exchange.

Sirca is a leading provider of financial data and eResearch services to over 200 Universities, regulators and financial market participants world-wide. Structured as a public-private sector partnership, Sirca delivers convenient on-line access to the world’s largest integrated financial market databases and associated search and analytic tools.

SIRCA provides access to Reuters DataScope Tick History (RDTH). This is an historical market data service, offering:

  • Global intraday Time and Sales;
  • Time and Quotes;
  • Market Depth; and
  • Corporate Actions content from January 1996.

Data is provided for instruments across Equities, Futures, Options, Commodities and Energy, Indices, Foreign Exchange, Money Market, Fixed Income, Funds and Economic Indicators Asset Classes.

Data request and retrieval are performed all from the convenience of a Reuters hosted web interface, with no additional hardware required.

Software

Software available for work in finance and financial econometrics includes Excel and SPSSPC. Plus a suite of programs for time series analysis including open source software: GRETL; JMULTI; R and commercial packages such as:
