Retirement savings strategy choices: style and sophistication

2009 AFAANZ Research Grant

This project will assess the style and level of sophistication evident in investment strategy choices of a sample of members drawn from three Australian superannuation funds. The primary aim of the project is to investigate evidence of naive diversification heuristics and home bias in member superannuation choices. A descriptive analysis of average asset allocations, evident patterns, and distributions will be followed by a regression analysis to investigate the explanatory power of fund, investment, and individual member characteristics. Important stakeholders include members, fund trustees, APRA as key regulator, and government as chief architect of retirement income policy.
