WA Scriptwriter Gary Sewell who graduated from the WA Screen Academy in 2008 with a Masters of Professional Communications (Screen Studies) has received his third Australian Writers Guide nomination in the Television - Serial category for his work on Home and Away.
In the year of his graduation Gary was funded through FTI’s RAW Nerve initiative to write/direct his thriller short, ‘Shatter’. The following year he was the recipient of a T-Vis development grant for the TV drama concept 'Strange Practice'. Gary has since gone on to secure a Screenwest-funded attachment with Southern Star in the script department of TV drama 'Rescue Special Ops'. This has led to employment as a Researcher, Script Coordinator and Trainee Script Editor across three series of 'Rescue'.
Gary has worked as a Trainee Script Editor on Southern Star's 'Wild Boys' drama and assisted with the development of several other TV projects. Building on this experience, Gary then joined the script department of Home and Away and moved up the ranks from Script Coordinator to Storyliner, Script Editor, Associate Script Producer and finally Script Producer.
Gary’s work on Home and Away led to his first AWGIE award for Best Serial Script in 2013 and another one has been nominated in 2016. “The AWGIES are the premier national awards presented annually by the Australian Writers Guild for Performance Writers – film, television, radio, stage and multimedia. They are highly prized for their career-enhancing potential. We are very proud of Gary for his third nomination in the competitive world of writing for the screen,” said Dr. Cathy Henkel, Director of the WA screen Academy. Gary was also nominated for an AWGIE for a short film script 'Bursting!' in 2013. Gary's gone on to work in the UK on Lime Pictures' serial drama Hollyoaks as a Script Editor and looks forward to continuing work both in Australia and abroad.
