Ron Nyisztor: Artist in Focus

Wednesday, 26 July 2017

The School of Arts and Humanities is proud to present Ron Nyisztor: Artist in Focus, an exhibition celebrating the works of Perth based artist Ron Nyisztor at Gallery 25 on the ECU Mount Lawley Campus.

A long term and dedicated practitioner of the visual arts, Nyisztor has amassed a substantial and impressive CV. His arts practice is articulated through a commitment to innovation and technical excellence, with thematic concerns that shift fluidly across material and concept, frequently surprising with his often unorthodox view of the world.

Works selected for this exhibition originate from a period of Ron’s practice that focused on the debris of building processes. In all their raw and crumbling imperfection, bricks, mortar, planks and fluorescent lights are brought to life through magnified scale along with fastidious structural detail and a refined micro-sensibility. The discarded and the mundane are regenerated and monumentalised; they shift elegantly from the unremarkable to the lofty as exquisitely honed objects.

Nyisztor is an accomplished and highly respected member of the WA arts scene, having won many major awards and featuring in most of the significant public and private collections in the state. With an impressive international presence and extensive solo and group exhibition history, Nyisztor retains a key prominence within the ECU Permanent Art Collection.

In 2007, Ron launched Nyisztor Studio in Melville, a prominent gallery space that over the last decade has seen many great artists at varying career stages hold exhibitions both solo and collaborative. Nyisztor Studio is an independent ‘Artist Run Space’ that has been instrumental in launching significant programs, attracting local, national and international artists, the space is suitable for many forms of arts practice from the traditional to the experimental.

By providing this artist’s hub, Nyisztor Studio supports associated artists and mid-career professionals based in WA who choose to exhibit in a non-commercial space. Nyisztor Studio also provides opportunities and work spaces for emerging and ‘fringe’ artists as well as experimental projects. As a great supporter of the WA art scene and a long standing and strong advocate for emerging artists, Nyisztor is active in the promotion of arts venues, regional centres and overseas collaborations.

This is the first of an anticipated annual program of Artists in Focus at Gallery 25. Artists with strong representation in the ECU Permanent Art Collection and an on-going contemporary practice will be eligible for selection. All are welcome to visit Gallery 25 to enjoy this special presentation of work.
