The power of the media and the impact on our lives was discussed at a public debate entitled Exploding media myths: Misrepresenting Australia?
Held on 20 November 2008 at the University of New South Wales, the event brought together those who create the stories; those who make policy; those who manage public opinion; and those who have been affected by media reporting.
Every image, news segment and interview we see or hear is mediated by news professionals, journalists, advertisers and public relations practitioners. But what has this mediation led to? Are we a more relaxed, content and confident nation, or one gripped by anxiety and fear?
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, it was only in the 1920's that people began to use the expression, 'the power of the media', when it was realised that media and power are closely related.
