Intelligence-led policing is a highly useful crime reduction strategy (Crous, 2005). Intelligence obtained from those directly involved in the criminal world is of particular value to policing agencies.
Despite this, the use of intelligence obtained from human sources (previously referred to as informants), is often overlooked as a legitimate means of policing due to the risks associated with the strategy. However, it has been suggested that identified risks such as corruption and retaliatory violence are largely a consequence of the ineffective management of human sources (Crous, 2005).
This research project, conducted in collaboration with WA Police, aims to build an evidence base regarding the effective management of human sources within policing agencies.
Specifically, the research aims to determine the risks and benefits associated with human source management and develop strategies that minimise the risks and maximise the benefits to ensure an integrated, professional and ethical system of human source recruitment and management.
