Outbound students

Study Tours

Study Tours are a type of program that can involve customised academic and cultural activities and are led by an Academic staff member. Study tours normally run from two to four weeks.

The School of Business and Law have organised study tours to Bhutan, Borneo, Japan and China partnering with Royal Thimphu College, Tokyo City University, Kyoto Sangyo University, Universiti Malaysia Sabah and Ocean University.

Students will have the opportunity to collaborate with students and professionals in their area of study as well as participating in a range of cultural and social activities. Students may receive Government or University funding to participate in these study tours.

Planning and Business Study Tour

This 2 week stour will introduce ECU undergraduate planning and business students to international best practice applications of urban design, planning and development within the context of urban Japan, focussing on Tokyo and Kyoto. Partnering with Tokyo City University and Kyoto Sangyo University, students will observe a showcase of key urban planning and development issues such as urban sprawl, urban congestion, traffic management, integrated development, density and open space provision. In addition to the academic gains, students will be able to participate in cultural events in Tokyo and Kyoto, where they will be introduced to Japanese life and culture. The Study Tour unit is Planning Study Tour (PLN3616).

SBL Management Study Tour to Beijing and Qingdao

This study tour is open to students in the School of Business and Law. Students in other schools may apply, but should discuss credit first with their course coordinator. Selected students will have the opportunity to experience Chinese best practice applications of business management, international trade and culture, and prepare for an international business and management career. This study tour takes place in Beijing, China’s capital city, and Qingdao, one of China’s main business centres and port cities for foreign trade and foreign direct investment. Students will gain an insight into international trade, particularly logistics and export-import, interact with domestic and foreign students in China, and develop their networks and cultural competency. The tour incorporates a visit to the Ocean University of China and site visits to the Qingdao port with high-tech facilities, a number of large Chinese successful multinationals and entrepreneurial businesses.

Sri Lanka Business and Culture Study tour 2018

Undergraduate students in the School of Business & Law are invited to participate in a 17-day study tour to Colombo, Sri Lanka. This tour will cover culture and negotiation methods. Students will have the opportunity to engage with like-minded students from the longstanding ECU partner, the Australian College of Business and Technology (ACBT). In addition to classes on campus, student will visit the tourist bureau, Austrade, markets and local industries. Introductory language studies will feature in the study tour unit.

Student Exchange

As an ECU student you have the opportunity to study for one or two semesters at an overseas ECU Exchange Partner and gain credit towards your ECU degree. Likewise, our partners' students can undertake an exchange at ECU and receive credit at their home institution. We have around 90 exchange partners in 35 countries.

Study Abroad

You can also undertake study at an overseas University which is not an ECU Exchange Partner, as a "Study Abroad" student, rather than an "Exchange" student. See the Study abroad webpage for more information.

Partner Schools

We have partnerships with about 90 institutions in 35 countries around the world; and if you go on exchange for two semesters, you can even choose to study in two different countries.

Funding Opportunities

Did you know, as a Domestic student you could be eligible for a $3000 grant to travel overseas on a study tour? This can be used towards flights, accommodation and more. There are a range of funding sources that ECU students may be eligible for, to assist in undertaking some study overseas. See the Financial assistance webpage for more information.

Government Funding

The Australian Government, through the Department of Education and Training and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), administers different funding programs to encourage the outbound mobility of Australian students. The Department of Education and Training also has programs to support international students having an inbound experience and coming to ECU. The International Office is responsible for coordinating the University's applications, acceptance and acquittal of Australian Government mobility funding as well as the allocation and distribution of awarded Australian Government mobility grants to ECU students.

There are currently 8 different funding programs offered by the Australian Government:
