Planning’s Spanish Influence

Spanish PhD candidate joins the Centre for Planning.

The Centre for Planning welcomes Xavier Garcia Acosta for a postdoctoral internship of three months. Xavier is a human geography PhD candidate from the University of Girona, Spain. The change of urban form in the regions close to Girona, in part because of the development of tourism on the Costa Brava, has created new challenges for water utilities and planners.

Xavier has an interest in the prediction of urban domestic water consumption from urban development, demographic, household characteristics, and attitudinal variables. Community perceptions of possible future sources of supply are also of interest.

Xavier will be examining methodologies and findings from research conducted by Centre members and the Water Corporation for potential application to Spain. Where feasible, direct comparisons may be made between two locations with Mediterranean climates and with a penchant for outdoor domestic water use.
