‘A Day in Life of a Planner’ assignment.
Planning students in the unit PLN4600 Practice of Planning experienced ‘A Day in the Life of a Planner’ in their latest assignment, which required them to undertake an industry placement for a day. The aim of the assignment was to bridge the gap between theory and practice, providing students with skills for the workplace.
The students spent time with professional planners in the public and private sectors, interviewing them on all aspects of the job. The students learned about the day-to-day tasks of the job, and received advice from experienced planners. The students then produced posters and video presentations about their day for their assignment.
The posters and videos were presented at a special lunch sponsored by Yanchep Beach Joint Venture on Thursday 27 October, at ECU’s Joondalup campus. Students attended alongside the professional planners they had worked with.
After viewing all the videos and posters, two students were awarded prizes, based on a vote. Reyne Dial was awarded the prize for best poster, and Melissa Shaw was awarded best video.
Planning lecturer, Ms Jenny George, commented that the students had learned a lot from the experience.
“Many of the students put in a great effort, and were able to get a lot out of this exercise. As well as getting a preview of what their future career might be like, they were able to make strong connections with industry,” she said.
