Painting and Light: Painting Technologies

Duration: 6 weeks: Saturday, 1.30-4.30pm
Location: ECU, Mt Lawley Campus, Building 5
Dates: Saturday 12th March, 19th March - 16th April 2011
Lecturer: Ben Waters

Light and how it behaves is central to the painter. This short course will investigate different recipes for the preparation of painting surfaces. For example, working with techniques developed in the Renaissance, we will make our own gesso and apply it to wooden panels. In painting successive layers, we will consider ways to trap, reflect and ‘pool’ light with our painting methods and surfaces. We will also make various mediums, including Damar varnish and encaustic (wax). This short course is designed to illuminate your thinking in terms of how to approach painting. We will take this journey by considering artists and their methods from art history and by making our own responses. By the end of the course you will have the knowledge to begin to think about how to vary the registers of light that appear to radiate from your painting.
