Rottofest 3 - 4 September

Wednesday, 20 July 2011

“I can‘t think of a better excuse to celebrate spring, than to get your friends together and hightail a ferry over to Rotto for a weekend of Australia’s best stand-up comedy, funny flicks and killer tunes“. Ronan Freeburn, Rottofest 2011 Festival Co-Director.

Rottofest returns in the first weekend of spring (3 - 4 September) for its third annual serving of comedy, film and music on Western Australia’s Island playground, Rottnest Island. In a weekend jam-packed full of goodness, it all kicks off on Saturday September 3rd with a day of tunes at Hotel Rottnest featuring: The Brow Horn Orchestra plus Sam Perry, Diger Rokwell with Felicity Groom, Ruby Boots, Carl Fox, Kathryn Rollins, The Cut & Paste Sound System and Jump Climb DJ’s.

Rottofest’s major event on Saturday night delivers the national Launch the Comedian competition with comic Dave Thornton as your MC. Best known as a nationally touring stand-up comedian and panellist on the 7pm project, Thornton is sure to have the crowd laughing their respective pants off.

With $3,000 up for grabs, Launch the Comedian’s competitors include high calibre national comics: Matt Okine (NSW), Damien Power (QLD), Emma Zammit (WA), Ronny Chieng (VIC), Jon Brooks (SA) & Danny McGinlay (VIC).

During Saturday and Sunday, the Island will be buzzing daily with street performers including Ross Vegas, Jon Madd, Hardy Ha Ha to name just a few in the main settlement, stand-up comedy shows at the Governors Bar and punters can even watch the comedy skit and short film entries from the Search for Australia’s Funniest Filmmakers, with screenings held at the iconic Rottnest Island Picture Hall. The best judged comedy skit and comedy short film entries from Search for Australia’s Funniest Filmmakers and Keep Australia Beautiful’s Trash My Ad competitions will be awarded cash prizes on Sunday 4th. Wrapping it all up is a Sunday session courtesy of the Community at Hotel Rottnest starring beat extraordinaires: Vishnu, Diger Rokwell, the smooth MC styling’s of Mathas, Empty Cup and brought home by Sibalance & Boost Hero Man. A fitting finale to a festival weekend of Comedy, Film and Music on Rottnest Island.
