February 2012 is the 25th anniversary of Australia and Fremantle losing The America’s Cup, previously heralded as Australia’s greatest sporting triumph.

Cup City is a series of black and white photographs by Kevin Ballantine, picturing the terrain of the Royal Perth Yacht Club’s defense of the international yacht race.

Ballantine used a medium format camera to document the defense of the Cup, an unusual choice for street photography given the camera’s bulk and size. The results of Ballantine's documentation are large prints arranged in triptychs of stark, bleached landscapes and people typifying Perth and Fremantle in the summer of 1986/1987.
