Alternative practices and experimentation underscore Contemporary Arts and Performance’s research. Through the diverse range of processes and products, artistic investigations question the human condition and draw attention to the various ways in which knowledge is experienced, conceived and conveyed. Sounds, shapes, textures; dynamics, movement and images, interconnect to inform research within academic boundaries and enrich the cultural imagination. The unexpected meets critical reflection, with research in and about creative practices the focus. Disciplinary specific analyses lie side by side with inter-disciplinary pursuits.
The arts research network, and research at WAAPA and SCA, increasingly challenges the accepted relationship of quantitative and qualitative research. There is an emerging body of practice arguing that a third approach, being performative research, deserves recognition and legitimacy.
The artistic application and interrogation of sound in its multiple manifestations across time are principal concerns of this practice-led group of researchers. Investigators probe instrumental techniques, notational media and sonic interference to examine the intangibles of auditory sensations in which we are enveloped.
Believing dance to be a form of embodied knowledge, the Dance Research Centre takes practice through choreography, pedagogy and performance as its particular focus of investigations, aiming to give voice to an endeavour traditionally associated with the ‘non-verbal body.’ Documentation of contemporary Australian choreographers, interactions between dance-making trends in Asia and Australia, and the spatio-temporal ramifications of moving bodies across virtual terrains constitute a sampling of topics addressed by this group.
