Miners and Dealers
Miners and dealers
The intention of this project is to research and present the nexus of mining and marketing, with its environmental and cultural implications in the discourse of rocks and rock-collecting. It is proposed that miners, dealers, museum collection curators and regulators be interviewed, examining mining, dealing and marketing, and that a study of the political economy of rocks and rock-collecting be undertaken to produce a more complete picture of the discourse and practices of rock-collecting. Associated with this research will be an examination of the role museums play in stimulating and partaking in the marketing of rocks and minerals. Data collecting for the proposed research project will be of an ethnographic nature with direct interviews, observation of activities and interactions, places and objects of interest being recorded on video. The outcomes of the research will be conference presentations and published papers in the area, and the video recordings will form the basis for a pilot documentary with a working title Miners and Dealers.
