Arts Research Network (ARN)
The Arts Research Network (ARN) sought to create links between arts practice and academic research.
The Strand Report (1998) noted that creative arts academics employed as artists achieve fewer research outcomes compared with historians or theorists of the arts.
The time other academics might devote to research and publishing was time the creative artists practiced their discipline. Little time was left for additional research and publishing as expected by many institutions.
In recognition of this dilemma, The Strand Report recommended the introduction of a 'research equivalence' category to recognise creative output.
Some universities developed a Creative and Performing Arts Index (CPAI), but this has not been mirrored by changes in research funding allocation.
Although the arts/science relationship is recognised, for example in the Clash of Cultures (1999) report celebrating achievements of the new media arts fund, and the launch of the ARC/Australia Council Synapse project (2003), tensions remain between 'academic research' and 'creative and performing arts research'.
Aspects of this issue were addressed at the Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE) mini-conference on 'Defining the Doctorate - including Doctoral Study in the Creative and Performing Arts'.
The ARN sought to build on the arts/science advances, and the AARE discussions by identifying a synergy between arts practice and 'academic research' to mirror that being explored between art and science/technology.
Theorists and practitioners came together to explore combined approaches and paradigms for arts research.
A website was developed to provide a forum where ARN members could interact and explore ways to traverse navigate the theory/practice divide.
ARN members had access to creative artists, cultural theorists and researchers who could: inform projects by drawing from their own experiences; provide mentorship; suggest new avenues of exploration and practice; and draw from a wide pool of talented international connections.
