Associate Professor Deslea Konza, Associate Professor of Language and Literacy and Director of the Fogarty Learning Centre at ECU, will be the first speaker at the Education Institute Research Seminars which begin on Thursday 8 March.

Associate Professor Deslea Konza was a primary and special education teacher in NSW for 15 years before taking up a position at the University of Wollongong, where her roles included Special Education Coordinator of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Studies and Director of the Primary Program. She has been Associate Professor of Language and Literacy and Director of the Fogarty Learning Centre at ECU since August 2007. Deslea’s current research centres on the development of reading skills, particularly for those children who do not acquire these skills as easily as their peers. She has published textbooks, book chapters and journal articles in the areas of reading difficulties, teacher education, curriculum adjustment and classroom management. She has also published a series of books for junior secondary students who struggle with the literacy level of most textbooks. Deslea is currently involved in research and development projects that focus on developing the literacy of students in low SES primary schools.
