ECU will play host to this years Math Talent Quest in association with Mathematical Association of Western Australia (MAWA).
The focus of the Maths Talent Quest (MTQ) is on the process of mathematical investigations. Open to all primary and secondary students, the MTQ aims to promote interest in mathematics and foster positive attitudes amongst students, teachers and parents. First held in 1982, the MTQ is an annual activity organised by the Student Activities Convenors of The Mathematical Association of Western Australia (MAWA).
Looking at real life situations and finding that mathematics is everywhere helps capture the imagination of both teachers and students alike. The MTQ allows students to investigate mathematics on an individual, group or class basis with the opportunity to have fun exploring mathematics in real life situations.
The MTQ engages students in mathematics project work and investigations, as well as providing them with an opportunity to use STEM skills to communicate to their peers, and a state-wide and national audience. In addition, participating in the MTQ rewards student’s efforts. Furthermore, MTQ supports teachers with professional learning and resources on how to implement and manage investigative projects, and how to assess and report student achievement.
ECU is proud to host this year’s MTQ event at our Mount Lawley campus. To enrich our pre-service teachers professional practice, students enrolled in the Mathematics Specialist stream have been invited to collaborate with the talented MAWA team and help judge this year’s entries. MTQ judging will occur on Tuesday, 15 August at our Mount Lawley campus where all of the MTQ entries will be showcased.
Registration into this year’s MTQ is available online and is open until Friday, 21 July 2017.
