Presenter: Dr David Rhodes
Title: Building respectful and inclusive schools
Biography: Dr David Rhodes is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education at Edith Cowan University in Western Australia. His research has focused on social-justice issues, inclusion, combating discrimination in all of its forms, and the celebration of diversity. David has researched and written widely about equity-related educational and social justice issues. His personal experience of youth homelessness and his love of literature converged to inspire the focus of his research, the promotion of safe and nurturing school and community environments for LGBTIQ children and youth and those questioning their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
Abstract: The needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) students have until recently been largely silenced or ignored within school communities. LGBTIQ children and youth have been members of a minority that society has chosen to regard as solely adult. To think of young people as sexual beings has hitherto remained a controversial, if not taboo topic. To consider them otherwise is to acknowledge that young people possess sexualities and gender identities.
This presentation seeks to shatter these silences and challenge educators, schools and others to work together to create safe and inclusive communities for LGBTIQ children, youth, adults and rainbow families in regional Western Australia, with a focus on educational institutions and the important role they have in facilitating inclusion and the celebration of diversity.
