Evaluation of four family literacy projects. Project 1: Better Beginnings 4-5 years in remote communities

In this project we are evaluating the implementation and outcomes of a family literacy program in two remote communities in Western Australia. The aim of this Better Beginnings program is to build partnerships between community organisations, schools and families with a focus on 4-5 year old children, to support language and literacy learning.

In 2012, the CREC team made the first of our visits to two remote sites in Western Australia to talk with parents, teachers, community members and children about the Better Beginnings program. We followed up these visits again in 2013, meeting many families to discuss the impact of the Better Beginnings program. 2014 will see us head out again to these sites, to see if there has been lasting benefit to these communities in supporting their language and literacy skills.
