The ‘Equalprime’ project uses video studies of primary science classrooms in Australia, Taiwan, and Germany to explore teaching and learning practices which provide opportunities for quality reasoning and learning in science in diverse cultures. The Australian, German and Taiwanese research groups will collect video case studies so that cross-cultural comparisons can be made. The research draws on multiple theoretical perspectives to analyse the classroom video footage, transcripts of classroom discourse, and representations of science concepts and processes to better understand how teachers support students to construct meaning from science experiments through constructing representations, discussion and reasoning. The project is funded under the ARC Discovery program.
