Focused intervention in early literacy development - Association of Independent Schools in Western Australia

This project is building on the work of the National Focused Intervention in Early Literacy Development Pilot program.

It involves working with a number of independent schools to build the capacity of teachers to develop early literacy skills in all students in the beginning years of formal schooling. It incorporates a resource package that was developed as part of the initial pilot project. Designed as a guide for educators to identify specific areas of literacy weakness, the package offers professional development and strategies that help close the literacy gap found in many schools with indigenous children and/or a high incidence of cultural and linguistic diversity. In a cycle of reflection and research, teachers work through a series of steps to identify the specific literacy needs of young students and to monitor the effectiveness of changes made to teaching and learning strategies.
