There are nine remote schools in the Kimberley region of WA that are currently involved. Fifteen school leaders have attended four modules to build their instructional leadership of reading, and 37 teachers and Aboriginal support staff have participated in workshops to build their literacy knowledge and understanding of the explicit teaching of reading.
Associate Professor Deslea Konza and Dr Susan Main are visiting schools to observe teaching and provide feedback and the Regional Director Greg Robson, acts as the leadership mentor. Between visits, short video clips of teaching are emailed so additional feedback can be provided. Literacy assessments have been administered to over 60 students so far across the schools.
Post project assessments will be conducted in late 2015. In early 2015, additional professional learning days will be conducted to induct new staff members into the project as the turnover of teachers in remote regions is very high.
