Literacy is currently a national priority. Schools have a mandate to ensure that all students have the literacy skills to complete their secondary schooling successfully. It is imperative that schools find new ways of working with the 16 to 25 percent of children who are currently not successful in literacy in Years 4 to 8. This research built on a Fogarty Learning Centre pilot project in which assessment and literacy teaching processes to support students with literacy difficulties in Years 4 to 8, was trialled in four schools with extended research undertaken through the collaboration with approximately 25 Catholic Education Office and Association of Independent Schools in WA schools.
