High school students experience Business at Edith Cowan University

At the ECU Business Experience heats, 27 & 28 June.

Eleven Perth high schools recently took the trip to ECU’s Joondalup campus to participate in the heats of the challenging business skills competition, the ECU Business Experience.

Students participated in an exciting ECU Business Edge workshop for the first part of the day, getting a taste of tertiary-level learning and the core ECU Business Edge program, which focuses on employability skills. They were then given the chance to put their new skills to the test with an innovative case study.

This year’s case study focused on the fictional company Harrison Engineering and their new children’s ride-on car product, and had the students applying creative thinking and business judgment to make a key decision: whether to manufacture the product onshore in Australia or offshore, and analysing the implications each scenario.

School teams worked for four hours to find creative solutions for the case study. They were then allowed ten minutes to present their findings to a panel of judges in ECU’s Council Chambers.

The first heat saw Carine Senior High School, Lake Joondalup Baptist College, Mater Dei College, Morley Senior High School, Perth Modern School and Wesley College compete for two coveted spots in the Grand Final.

It was a tough decision for judges Professor Mark Stoney, Associate Dean Teaching and Learning; Ms Jen Baker, Business Director at 303 Advertising; and Dr Ian Martinus of Yanchep Beach Joint Venture, but in the end Perth Modern School and Wesley College emerged victorious.

The second heat brought competition between Duncraig Senior High School, John XXIII College, Kingsway Christian College, Quinns Baptist College and Trinity College for the final two places in the Grand Final.

Dr Ian Martinus, Ms Linda Riebe, Program Director of ECU Business Edge; and Ms Jenny Devine, Lecturer in ECU’s School of Management, together determined the final two schools to enter the Grand Final would be John XIII College and Trinity College.
