Two Law students excel in 2011 Plain English Drafting Competition.
Two first-year ECU Law students were recently named winners of the 2011 Plain English Drafting Competition, held by the Clear Writing Committee of the Law Society of Western Australia. Shane Van Styn and Michelle Wilkes join four fourth-year University of Western Australia students as the six winners of this year’s competition.
The competition is open to undergraduate law students in Western Australia, and aims to encourage writing that communicates clearly and effectively to the intended reader. Students are set the task of applying clear writing drafting principles in a letter. This year’s brief was to write a letter to a client concerning a drink driving conviction.
Over 100 entries were received from all four of WA’s law schools. The entries were blind-marked by a panel, consisting of eight senior members of the legal profession, with six winners in total chosen.
Shane, Michelle, and the four winners from UWA will each receive a cash prize of $150.
