An exploration of the leisure travel behaviour of fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) workers in Western Australia.
Fly into work; Fly out to Bali
Recently there has been considerable media focus on the links between the holiday destination of Bali and the Western Australian fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) workforce.
There is anecdotal evidence that more and more FIFO’s are choosing to spend their days off in Bali. Some are even relocating permanently to the Island (Bearup 2012).
This research project seeks to provide a deeper understanding of these phenomena.
There are now 17 flights a day from Perth to Bali and two per day from Pt Hedland (Bearup 2012). This research will investigate the leisure travel behaviour of the Western Australian FIFO workforce, which according to the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia (2011) numbers approximately 46,800 workers.
Seeking participants
Are you a FIFO worker or the partner of a FIFO worker who has holidayed in Bali two or more times over the past five years? If yes, researchers from Edith Cowan University’s Centre for Innovative Practice would like to invite you to participate in this research project.
We are seeking interviewees to participate in a conversation that will last for 45 minutes and can be done via telephone, skype or in-person. All participants will also receive a shopping voucher to thank them for their time.
