Background

Helen began her academic career in 2001 as a sessional lecturer in Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) and commenced teaching part time at ECU in 2006, in the fields of SHRM and Employment Relations. In 2008 she completed her PhD, investigating the impact of downsizing on organisational knowledge and informal networks in organizations. She is a member of the WA State Council for the Australian Human Resource Institute and is the current Vice President for Professional Development.

Helen has held senior positions in the state public sector over the past 20 years, including Assistant Commission Workplace Agreements and Director Human Resources with the Department for Community Development/Child Protection. She continues to work extensively with the public sector undertaking consulting projects in all aspects of people management and engagement, strategic planning, organisational design and restructuring, as well as undertaking workplace investigations, reviews, conciliation and mediation.

  • 2012 - Emerald Literati Network Award for Excellence, Highly Commended Paper: "Do downsizing decisions affect organisational knowledge and performance?" published in Management Decision.
  • 2012 - ECU Teaching and Learning Grant, ‘Building Consensus on a syllabus for Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM): A Delphi Study. (H Sitlington, Associate Investigator).

Research

Helen’s current research projects include an examination of employee turnover in the "Fly-in fly-out" (FIFO) mining sector and investigation of SHRM curriculum design and delivery in tertiary organisations. She currently supervises a number of Higher Degree by Research students undertaking HRM research projects in the areas of knowledge management and the role of line managers in HRM/organisational outcomes.
