ECU takes in insight into the WA marine industry

The WA marine has a positive outlook thanks to extensive research conducted by ECU.

The results are in and the future outlook is positive for Western Australia’s marine industry, thanks to an extensive survey commissioned by the Department of Commerce and completed by ECU.

More than 200 telephone interviews were conducted over the past 12 months by ECU’s Survey Research Centre to investigate the size, structure and economic impact of the marine industry in Western Australia.

The survey was the biggest in the state for the marine industry and a significant achievement for ECU. The research addressed issues concerning legislation and expansion, with the results providing a basis for future infrastructure development by the State Government.

The survey found that many areas within the marine industry had experienced significant growth and that the industry was currently valued at more than $3.5 billion making a significant contribution to the State’s economy.

The chief investigator was Dr Helen Cripps, Lecturer in School of Marketing, Tourism and Leisure, who was approached by the Department of Commerce and Industry to conduct the survey. Helen praised the skilled work of ECU’s Survey Research Centre led by Vicki Graham for their dedication and high response rate.

A detailed summary of the report can be obtained the Australian Marine Complex.
