ECU tourism gets involved with industry
Staff and students from MTL recently attended the Tourism WA conference.
The Tourism WA Conference was held from 18 - 20 April 2010 at the Burswood Entertainment Complex, which was attended by Dr Dale Sanders, Program Coordinator for Tourism and Hospitality Management, Dr Julie Nyanjom and Dr Megan LeClus, accompanied by three research students.
The event focussed on the current situation of tourism in WA, exploring the potential horizons for the future of the industry.
Several issues were raised, as detailed by Tourism Management Honours student Hasoly Hurtado.
“Industry professionals questioned why we couldn’t become a well known tourism destination similar to Queensland” she said.
“We have the beaches, the great weather and have a lot of potential to be an amazing holiday destination.”
Another concern was current retail trading hours, which limit the liveliness of the city. This needs to be addressed through making retailers feel like they are part of the tourism industry and highlight the benefits for them, in turn seeking extended trading.
Mamoon Allan, a PhD candidate from within the School of Marketing, Tourism and Leisure, found the conference extremely beneficial, with it being an opportunity to hear from experts from within his field.
“It was very beneficial for me as my PhD topic includes issues relating to WA Tourism, whereby the conference enriched both my experience and knowledge about the industry.”
