Head of School to bring innovation to WA
Associate Professor David Clark Murphy has won a University Professional Development Scholarship.
Head of the School of Marketing, Tourism and Leisure, Associate Professor David Clark-Murphy, has been granted a $5,000 scholarship from the Perth Convention Bureau, which was recently awarded at the West Australian Art Gallery.
Using his extensive networks and over 30 years of industry experience in senior management roles, David prepared a proposal that seeks to bring the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s annual “Global Start-up Workshop” (GSW) to Perth in 2012.
The GSW is the most significant annual global innovation conference, which was most recently held in March in Reykjavik, Iceland. The conference, currently in its 13th year, aims to help solve real problems in the host country, such as the collapsed banking system of Iceland following the Global Financial Crisis.
In his submission to the Perth Convention Bureau, David proposes to bring the conference to Perth, to be held in March/April 2012. Key political personalities, senior government and industry representatives, plus academic scientists and sustainability researchers would be sought after as key speakers.
“Australia has a number of key issues and problems caused or aggravated by the speed of increased wealth, alienation of parts of our communities, and increased separation amongst people and interests through different economic states” he says.
“I am confidence that the innovation industry would find these problems attractive and worthwhile, as they can, at least to some extent, be generally applied across many countries and communities.”
David plans to use the scholarship to contribute towards his travel expenses in order to make the pitch in 2011 at the GSW.
