ECU facilitates community change

The ECU Community Change Excursions saw high school students go around the Perth metropolitan region and visit minority groups.

On 8 July 2010 over 130 bright minded and politically astute high school students embarked on the ECU Faculty of Business and Law Community Change Excursions as a part of the 49th United Nations Youth Association (UNYA) National Youth Conference (UNYC).

The annual conference aims to educate young delegates about important international issues in the pursuit of social justice. UNYC 2010, held in Perth, challenged today’s youth to face up to discrimination and unfairness in their own communities as they became advocates for the future through the conference theme of “Advocating for Change”.

Concerned with the enactment of advocacy, leadership and empowerment, conference delegates from around Australia and New Zealand formed small groups to engage with community minority groups, sharing the struggles for equality and social justice.

“It is an opportunity for delegates to get some valued insight as to the challenges facing empowerment from real situations and real struggles” says UNYC Convener Katherine Broad.

“This will be the first time a UNYC has run this type of activity, which invites delegates to actively walk in the shoes of those with vastly different experiences.”

The delegates travelled throughout the Perth metropolitan region, visiting a range of community groups and organizations.

“This is the first time a conference theme had been so personal” remarks Ms Broad.

“This was an amazing, euphoric experience that has left us all empowered” remarked one conference delegate.

The ECU Faculty of Business and Law Change Excursions were a true reflection of the conference theme, which focused on the empowerment of a range of disadvantaged social groups, including young people, Indigenous people, women, ethnic minorities and people with disabilities.
