Students awarded in showcase event
Sarah Campbell and Ashleigh Davis get awarded the Dr Heather MacGowan (OAM) Awards.
At the annual Industry Practice Showcase event, held in the ECU Art Gallery, Bachelor of Sport Management students Sarah Campbell and Ashleigh Davis were awarded the Dr Heather MacGowan (OAM) Professional Practice in Sport, Recreation and Event Management Awards.
Presented on Wednesday 27 October, the Awards recognise students who demonstrate high levels of excellence in their industry practice experience and then an outstanding display of professionalism through their poster and personal presentation, all of which form assessment requirements for the LSC3112 Industry Practice unit.
As part of the unit, students completed a professional placement in industry undertaking a minimum of 100 hours. Students were required to detail their experiences in a portfolio, as well as make a poster to present to guests at the function.
Each student was interviewed by three guest judges on their placement and the quality of their materials. Following, students evaluated their peers’ work and welcomed some of the student supervisors from industry that were in attendance.
“The event represents the culmination of a lot of hard work,” said Dr Ruth Sibson, Course Coordinator for Sport, Recreation and Event Management.
“It was a great opportunity for the students to get out in industry and apply the knowledge they have learnt throughout their course.”
The awards are given in honour, recognition and memory of Dr Heather McGowan, who dedicated 27 years to the Australian sport and recreation industry, including an almost ten year association with ECU.
The students collectively worked over 2,800 hours throughout the semester, making a significant contribution to industry.
“It was a fantastic experience and I am really grateful to both ECU and my supervisor,” said Sarah.
Sarah has been offered a graduate position with the Department of Sport and Recreation, whilst Ashleigh is now working fulltime with Triathlon WA where she completed her industry practice.
Kendell Shaw was also recognised for her achievements after receiving the Student Choice award for the best student project, as voted on by her peers.
