Dr Helen Cripps conducts research on the local marina.
Dr Helen Cripps, lecturer in the School of Marketing, Tourism and Leisure, has been commissioned by the Department of Transport to undertake research into the social and economic impact of Hillarys Boat Harbour. Anyone who visits the popular local marina is being urged to participate in the research.
Hillarys Boat Harbour is a leading recreational destination in Perth, and has grown considerably since its opening in 1988, most notably with the 2008 renovations that saw the harbour expand to incorporate a new boardwalk, tavern and retail outlets. It attracts up to four million locals and visitors a year, and was named WA's best marina in 2009 with approximately 750 occupied pens.
Dr Cripps and a team of ECU students have been collecting data by conducting face-to-face interviews at the harbour, and through an online survey. The research will provide information about the value of harbour activities, from recreational and commercial fishing to retailing, tourism and hospitality, and other activities such as swimming and boating.
As part of the research project a photographic competition will be held, with entries opening in September this year. This will involve participants uploading their favourite photograph of Hillarys and describing in 25 words or less what Hillarys means to them. Details of the competition will be available shortly on the Hillarys Boat Harbour website.
The data collected from the community, harbour stakeholders and business owners will be used in decision-making about the future development of the harbour and other proposed maritime infrastructure throughout WA.
The research team has been conducting face-to-face interviews and surveys since March, and the online survey will continue to be available until the end of July. All the data collected, including the submissions from the photographic competition will be compiled in a report. The report will be launched in November by the Department of Transport at the awards ceremony for the photographic competition.
