Alcohol and pharmacotherapies for treatment

Dr Richard O’Regan

Richard trained as a GP and developed an interest in addiction medicine over 20 years ago. He is now an addiction medicine consultant with the North Metro Community Alcohol and Drug Service based at Joondalup where he treats individuals with problematic use of alcohol, prescription medications, and illicit drugs. Richard also works at Joondalup Hospital and Joondalup Community Mental Health Service where he provides a drug and alcohol consultation and liaison service.

He is involved in teaching addiction medicine to medical students, doctors and other health professionals and is the WA Branch Chair of the Australasian Chapter of Addiction Medicine.

About this resource

The following is a 15 minute synopsis describing an approach to alcohol withdrawal including the safer use of diazepam in the outpatient setting. Use of relapse prevention therapies is discussed together with follow-up and further referral options.
