Facilities
The School of Medical Sciences is located on ECU’s Joondalup Campus and offers a variety of working laboratories and demonstration wards for use by its students.
Anatomy – Room 17.105
This laboratory space is primarily used for the teaching of our fundamental anatomy unit EBH1101 Human Anatomy. This space is also used for instruction in SPS2202 Care and Prevention of Injuries. Both units are co-ordinated by Fiona Iredale. Students also receive instruction on exercise rehabilitation in this laboratory during the unit SPS2301 Exercise Rehabilitation.
Human Biology resources
The human biology discipline has ample resources for the areas of microbiology, genetics, histology and biochemistry. Human biology supply sufficient equipment so that students are able to work at their own pace, without the hassle of sharing. For microbiology, a range of equipment for the isolation, purification and identification of microbiological organisms is available. Equipment for the extraction, purification and amplification of DNA is also available: the school has PCR machines, electrophoresis apparatus (agarose and fluorescent and radio-isotope polyacrylamide equipment), fluorescent microscopes and digital imaging apparatus. For post graduate students, the facilities at the Research Centre are available for use on genetic-oriented postgraduate projects. Human biology maintains a fully equipped histology laboratory, with automatic tissue processing facilities for wax and plastic embedding as well as facilities for microtomy, ultramicrotomy and cryosectioning. Finally, the modern analytical techniques and equipment necessary for biochemical investigation, such as spectrophotometers, are also available in human biology.
Computing laboratories
There are 30 new IBM PC’s connected to broadband Internet available at the Computing Lab for study use. The lab is located in Building 21, Room 21.206. To log on, simply use the same username and password as you use for SIMO, MyECU and email. If you have trouble remembering your username or password, call the IT Service desk on extension 6000 from an internal phone or 6304 6000 from an external phone.
