Nine students and a staff member from the postgraduate brewing program recently completed a study tour to Queensland and NSW to examine the latest in brewing technology. The trip was funded by a generous donation from The Beer and Beef Club of WA, with free accommodation contributed by Stone and Wood Brewery and fund raising by students.
Hugh Dunn, Brewing Science Lecturer in the School of Natural Sciences, said the key objective of the trip was to expose students to recent technology advances in filtration, brewing processes, energy saving and water recovery that simply aren’t available to see in WA.
“While viewing the latest technology at large breweries was a key objective, it wasn’t the only benefit for the student group,” Mr Dunn said.
Students also spent four days working at Stone and Wood Brewery, a medium size brewery located at Byron Bay. This provided the opportunity to gain experience in an operating brewery environment, to work closely together as a team and to demonstrate the calibre of students in the brewing programme at ECU.
“The students performed very well and contributed not only to the Stone and Wood Brewery achieving its biggest week of production since they started but the students also recommended and produced an innovative piece of equipment to streamline the packaging process..”
As well as working at Stone and Wood Brewery, students visited the Castlemaine Brewery in Brisbane to view energy recovery systems and the latest technology available for beer filtration before visiting the Fosters Brewery at Yatala to inspect world’s best practice water recovery technology.
Students were impressed by the scale of operations at both breweries and were appreciative of the time given up by technical staff to show them around.
