Thibaut wins award at ASPAB

Sunday, 02 January 2011

Congratulations to Thibaut de Bettignies, who was recently award the best student presentation at the Australasian Society for Phycology and Aquatic Botany Conference. The ASPAB conference brings together many of Australasia’s best algal and seagrass researchers, and this year had a strong focus on kelp biology and ecology. Thibaut presented his work on ‘The importance of storms in driving export of organic matter (kelp wrack) from rocky reefs’. Thibaut’s work is redefining our understanding of what type, how much and when kelp material is removed from reefs and becomes available to be exported to adjacent marine ecosystems. His work is demonstrating the relative importance of erosion of tip material from the kelp thalli as the major form in which kelp is lost from reefs, with the dislodgment of whole thalli relatively less significant. Thibaut also presented a poster at the conference and is now having a well-earned rest, visiting his family back in France.
