Light reduction under a dredging event
In July, Drs Kathryn McMahon from the Centre for Marine Ecosystem Research, Visiting Fellow John Hedley from Argans and Peter Fearns ran a successful workshop on new techniques for modelling and predicting the impact of light reduction in benthic communities. Over 20 representatives from state and federal government agencies, industry and other local universities attended. The workshop discussed recent advances in modelling the light environment of photosynthetic benthos such as corals and seagrasses, and their responses to water column optical changes highlighting the work done in collaboration with Edith Cowan University, Curtin University, Oceanica Consulting Pty Ltd and Dr. John Hedley of ARGANS Ltd., UK on the Western Australian seagrass Amphibolis.
