Congratulations to the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Postgraduate Medicine second year student, Ms Kelly Miller, who recently received a scholarship from the Australian Army Undergraduate Scheme.
The scholarship is extremely competitive, and is open to all personnel within the military that seek financial support for their academic studies.
The scholarship will allow Kelly to attend university full time while the army pays for all academic costs, while also receiving a salary from her substantive army role.
Upon graduation, Kelly will also receive a commission for completing her degree, and will be appointed as a Lieutenant in the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps.
Lecturer in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Postgraduate Medicine, Doctor Gilly Smith, congratulates Kelly on her fantastic achievement.
"As a former member of the military, I understand the honour bestowed upon Kelly in receipt of this scholarship.
This is not only reflective of her high academic standard, it also reflects the level of professionalism she demonstrates in her current role and the strong belief she will fulfil the role of Nursing Officer with the same professionalism."
"It was wonderful for me as her lecturer and tutor that Kelly was able to share this with someone at the University who really understood the level of recognition this scholarship bestows," said Dr Smith.
"I think she is thoroughly deserving and I know she will not only make a great registered nurse after graduation, but she will bring a measure of understanding and compassion to the service men and women who come through her care in areas of operation."
Ms Miller is thrilled to receive the scholarship, which will provide her with financial support during her remaining time at ECU.
"I feel privileged to be given the opportunity to study without the stress of financial burden and that I look forward to proudly serving my country in a couple of years time as a Nursing Officer in the Australian Regular Army."
