Dr Sara Bayes is a research-focused Professor in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Her role includes leading studies, supervising Higher Degree by Research students and developing Midwife clinicians’ research capacity.

Background

Sara qualified as a Registered Midwife in Australia in 2003 and has worked clinically in a range of settings and models of care, including as a Midwife in Private Practice providing continuity of care. Sara has expertise in pre-registration midwifery curriculum design, accreditation and leadership as well as research capabilities. Sara has held academic positions at a number of universities previously.

Research Areas and Interests

Sara is committed to furthering our understanding of some of the problems faced by midwives, maternity services and the people who use them. She hopes to develop and implement effective solutions to those problems.

Sara is adept at using qualitative research methodologies and has particular expertise with Grounded Theory (especially Glaserian). She also works with Participatory Action Research and Implementation Science principles and methods for practice change initiatives.

Sara's research focus is on optimising midwives’ capacity to practice to the full scope of the role, and on fostering midwifery practice environments that engender job satisfaction and intention to stay in the profession.
