Bridging the gap between cultural practices and mainstream visitor management approaches to develop an integrated monitoring framework for Australia's northwest

This project aims to develop a framework to monitor visitor impacts on cultural and natural assets in coastal northwest Australia. The transformation of cultural and spiritual Indigenous knowledge into a culturally appropriate framework, that articulates and thus enables a holistic assessment of visitor impacts, is a significant advance from current approaches based largely on biophysical indicators. This project takes a holistic approach consistent with the traditional owners’ values, beliefs and laws, while drawing on current best practice in visitor impact monitoring. It provides a management tool that contributes to the sustainability of the Kimberley coastal tourism of Western Australia.
