As part of ECU’s research week, the Centre for Marine Ecosystems Research hosted a research showcase focussed on the use of molecular biological techniques in coastal ecosystem management. The showcase, organised by CMER postdoctoral researcher Dr Megan Huggett, involved five speakers who each presented their research outcomes from marine microbial ecology studies in the context of application to managers. This was followed by a panel discussion with senior research scientists from Department of Parks and Wildlife, Department of Water and the Department of Fisheries Western Australia. The event was highly successful, provoking meaningful discussion on how to incorporate molecular biology into management of our coastal systems. Attendees were enthusiastic about the concepts presented and a terrific session of networking over lunch followed the panel discussion.
