CCTV

The rapid increase in the number of CCTV installations in public places brings to the fore a range of new issues regarding the prevention, mitigation, and prosecution of crime. On the one hand, research is unable to show a decrease in crime from the deployment of CCTV cameras. On the other hand, CCTV has an impact on perceived safety, often creating sanguine perceptions about public places and public areas.

This research goes hand in glove with the examination of human factors in security. It also compliments ongoing research into CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) by progressing the discussions held at state, local and municipal levels regarding open spaces, transparency and privacy.

CCTV research is evolving into high technology solutions that rely upon sophisticated IT resources in an attempt to create real-time crime-mitigation solutions.
