Remote home-based healthcare

Researchers at ECU have worked with staff at Mercy Hospital Mount Lawley, with the support of Microsoft Research to develop a system for remote monitoring of foetal health. The solution consists of mobile phone-based software that interfaces the phone with an inexpensive portable doppler foetal heart rate (FHR) monitor that allows the mother to monitor FHR and also foetal activity (FA) remotely. The monitored data is then sent to an urban or regional centre for analysis by experts, who can then give feedback to the mother using the same mobile phone. In summary, the project involves:

  • remote diagnostic devices;
  • mobile phone applications to support remote health workers;
  • remote data collection; and
  • communication between health workers and their clients.
