A multi-wavelength light emitting diode array for near infrared breast scanner

The Electron Science Research Institute is undertaking research and development activities on the development of a multi-wavelength light source for breast screening.

Near Infrared Breast Scanner (NIBS) is a high resolution imaging device developed by China Daheng Group. NIBS enables early screening and diagnosis of breast cancer and, unlike current scanning techniques, can be used safely on women of all ages and regardless of breast size or density and those with implants.

In 2009, China Daheng Group supported an ECU industry collaboration grant for the development of a multi-wavelength NIR light source that will improve the accuracy of the NIBS device.

Researchers at the Electron Science Research Institute have developed a three N×N NIR LED array with centre wavelengths 750nm, 808nm and 870nm, as well as the electronic printed circuit board that drives the LED array sequentially so that three different breast images can be captured simultaneously using the single NIR CCD camera employed by a conventional NIBS device.

Currently, China Daheng Group is using the developed multi-wavelength LED source in clinical trials in China.

Current research and development on NIBS include the miniaturisation of LED array as well as the development of an image processing algorithm for the detection of small size cancer tumors.
