Photonic sensor for object discrimination using wavelength multiplexing

Prevention of unauthorized entry into buildings containing assets is a significant measure in the reduction of crime and terrorism in Australia. Military forces have employed laser scanning technology for projectile guidance, surveillance, satellite and missile tracking and target discrimination and recognition.

Laser scanning is a relatively new security technology, previously utilized for a wide variety of civil and military applications. In the last decade, terrestrial laser scanning has found new use as an active optical sensor for indoors and outdoors perimeter security.

At the Electron Science Research Institute, our researchers are working on the development of a photonic-based object discrimination remote sensor based on the use of multiple lasers of different wavelengths for measuring the spectral reflectance signatures. Examples of objects that have successfully been identified include brick, cement sheet, roof tile, cotton and leather.

Current research and development activities focus on the improvement of the precision of the photonic sensor for discrimination of a broader range of objects.
