Withdrawal without Financial and Academic Penalty Dates 2008
The HESA (Higher Education Support Act 2003) legislation requires that for every unit of study offered, the University must set a census or reporting date for the period in which that unit is taught. What this means is that the University now has authorised 12 teaching periods. Most students will undertake a normal Semester 1 and Semester 2 pattern but it is important to be aware of the dates applicable to your enrolment pattern.
- Academic Penalty - withdrawal from a unit after the published academic penalty date for the relevant teaching period will incur a fail for the unit with a grade of WF (withdrawn fail). This rule applies to all except VET, honours, research masters or doctoral thesis units.
- Financial liability - is incurred on census date for each academic period. You will incur the cost for the units that you are enrolled in as at census date for the relevant period.
The following table shows the latest date that you may withdraw without incurring any financial or academic penalty for studies undertaken in the relevant teaching period:

*** Census date: the date on which a student’s enrolment is taken to be finalised (section 8). HECS-HELP and FEE-HELP debts are incurred and SLE is consumed on census dates. Students must make their up-front payments and submit their request/s for Commonwealth assistance by the census date.
