Portfolio Pathway
what is the portfolio pathway?
The Portfolio Pathway caters for students who do a combination of wholly school-assessed (WSA) subjects and/or TEE subjects and/or Courses of Study, or mature age students who wish to enter university studies after several years away from formal education.
who can apply?
The Portfolio Pathway is open to school leavers and mature age applicants who meet the Admission requirements for Portfolio Admission. (see below)
what is a portfolio pathway application?
A Portfolio Pathway Application is a collection of documents that together form a Portfolio application which is submitted along with your completed Application for Admission form for entry into an ECU degree course.
The following documents must be supplied in order for your application to be assessed:
- Introductory Letter
When preparing your introductory letter you should ensure that it contains an explanation of why you want to attend university, the reasons and motivation behind the course you have chosen and your future career goals.
It is also important for you to demonstrate your understanding of what is required of university level study, for example; time commitment, recognition of deadlines; etc.
Your letter should reflect that you are committed, prepared and motivated to be successful in tertiary studies.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)/Resume
Your CV/Resume should outline all your experience to date, including:
Education/Training Courses
- Secondary schooling
- Any school programs for skill enhancement such as leadership programs, sports coaching, umpiring accreditation, etc.
- Formal qualifications from TAFE or any institution which is a registered training organisation (RTO.
- Training run by organisations who provide certificates of completion to participants.
- Industry training or accreditation.
- If you have completed in-house training, please also provide a letter on company or school letterhead confirming the details of training you completed.
Work Experience
- Paid positions
- Voluntary positions/unpaid work experience, for example: student council, Royal Life Saving, St Johns Ambulance and sports coaching.
Referees
Please include any written references you have and contact details for at least two referees who we can contact. At least one of these referees should be a professional/work/school reference.
- Other
Please provide COPIES of certificates, awards, academic records, references and any other documents you feel will support your application.
admission requirements
For admission via the Portfolio Pathway, applicants must meet English requirements of:
- a final scaled mark of at least 50 or a final school assessed grade of C or greater for TEE/TAE English or English Literature; OR
- English Course of Study scaled mark of at least 50 or a final standard of at least Level 5 school assessed grade; OR
- a final pass mark as set by the University for ESL; OR
- a final school assessed Senior English grade of A; OR
- achieved a STAT score of at least 145 on the written English component.
AND MUST ALSO:
Have studied a minimum of four subjects which may be TAE, TEE, Courses of Study, or approved CAF (WSA), and attained a total of at least 13 points determined as follows:
TEE/TAE subjects
Final scaled mark ≥ 70% or final school grade of A 7 points
Final scaled mark ≥ 60% but < 70% or final school grade of B 6 points
Final scaled mark ≥ 50% but < 60% or final school grade of C 5 points
whichever is higher
Approved CAF (WSA) subjects
Final school grade of A 5 points
Final school grade of B 3 points
Final school grade of C 1 point
Course of Study subjects
Level 7 or 8 on external assessment or final school level (whichever is the higher) 7 points
Level 6 on external assessment or final school level (whichever is the higher) 6 points
Level 5 on external assessment or final school level (whichever is the higher) 5 points
Level 4 on external assessment or final school level (whichever is the higher) 2 points (UPC only)
OR
Be mature age applicants who have a combination of other qualifications, education or experience, such as TAFE, private college qualifications, accredited training courses, work experience - either paid or voluntary work.
how are portfolios Assessed?
1st Stage
Your application will be assessed to determine that it meets Admission requirements, and how well it demonstrates:
- Tertiary Preparation - are you prepared for tertiary study?
- Tertiary Maturity - are you ready for the responsibilities of study?
- Independent Learning Strategies - are you capable of self directed study?
- Interpersonal and Communication Skills - written, spoken & team work skills.
- Achievement and Experience - your achievements, experiences in life, etc.
- Skills and Knowledge - evidence of any existing skills and knowledge in the chose field of study or other training/education.
All pre-requisites for courses being applied for must be met.
2nd Stage
Those who reach the second stage of assessment will be asked to attend an interview from which final selection will be made for entry to ECU.
If you are asked to come to an interview please bring all originals of the documents provided in your original application.
